OneDrive Sync Issues and How to Fix Them

Microsoft 365 OneDrive sync files troubleshooting By Cade · Updated 03/05/26 07:09 AM
When OneDrive shows sync errors, start by clicking the OneDrive cloud icon in the system tray and reviewing the error message shown. Common issues include file name conflicts (special characters like < > : " / \ | ? * are not allowed), files exceeding the 250 GB size limit, or path lengths over 400 characters. To reset OneDrive, press Win+R and run: %localappdata%\Microsoft\OneDrive\onedrive.exe /reset. Wait 2 minutes, then relaunch OneDrive from the Start menu. This clears the sync state without deleting files. If a specific folder won't sync, right-click the OneDrive tray icon, go to Settings > Account > Choose folders, and ensure the folder is checked. Also verify the user has edit permissions on the SharePoint library if syncing a shared folder. Check available local disk space — OneDrive requires sufficient free space to download files.
