Microsoft Teams: Creating Channels and Managing Tabs

Microsoft 365 Teams channels tabs collaboration By Kerry · Updated 03/05/26 07:09 AM
In Microsoft Teams, channels organize conversations by topic within a team. To add a channel, click the three dots (…) next to the team name and select Add channel. Give it a descriptive name, set privacy to Standard (visible to all members) or Private (invite-only), and click Add. Tabs allow you to pin apps and files directly inside a channel. Click the + icon at the top of a channel to add a tab — common choices include SharePoint document libraries, OneNote notebooks, Planner boards, or Power BI reports. This keeps all relevant resources in one place. Best practice: keep the General channel for announcements and create topic-specific channels (e.g., #projects, #invoicing, #it-support) for focused discussion. Archive inactive channels rather than deleting them to preserve conversation history.
