Fixing Slow Computer Performance on Windows

Windows troubleshooting slow performance startup RAM By Kerry · Updated 03/05/26 07:34 AM
Slow Windows performance usually has several contributing causes. Start with Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) — sort by CPU, Memory, and Disk to identify resource-hungry processes. High disk usage (90-100%) is common and often caused by Windows Search indexing, antivirus scans, or a failing HDD. Disable unnecessary startup programs: Task Manager > Startup tab, right-click and disable anything non-essential. For older machines, check RAM — 8GB is the minimum for smooth Windows 10/11 operation. Open Resource Monitor (resmon.exe) to see detailed memory usage and identify if the system is heavily paging to disk. Run Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr.exe) and check storage with Settings > System > Storage. Enable Storage Sense for automatic cleanup. If the machine has a traditional hard drive, consider upgrading to an SSD — this is often the single biggest performance improvement for older computers.
