Windows: Computer Won't Turn On or Boot

Windows won't boot won't start black screen power startup failure By Kerry · Updated 03/04/26 10:34 PM
If your Windows PC won't turn on, shows a black screen, or fails to boot, here's what to check before calling us. Step 1: Check power - Make sure the power cable is firmly plugged into both the computer and the wall outlet - Try a different outlet - For laptops, try removing the battery (if removable) and running on AC power only - Check that the power strip or surge protector is switched on Step 2: Listen and look for signs of life When you press the power button: - Do you hear the fan spin? - Do any lights come on? - Do you see anything on the screen, even briefly? If there's no response at all, the issue is likely power-related (power supply, battery, or outlet). Step 3: Check the monitor (for desktops) The computer may be running but the monitor may be the problem. - Make sure the monitor is plugged in and turned on - Check the cable connecting the monitor to the PC (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA) - Try a different cable or different monitor if available Step 4: Try a forced shutdown and restart Hold the power button for 10 seconds until the machine powers off. Wait 30 seconds. Press power again. Step 5: Check for Windows startup repair If Windows starts to load but then fails, it may enter Automatic Repair mode. Follow the on-screen prompts — Windows may be able to fix itself. Step 6: Boot into Safe Mode If Windows partially loads: 1. Hold Shift and click Restart from the Start menu 2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart 3. Press 4 to boot into Safe Mode If Windows works in Safe Mode, a driver or software is causing the problem. If none of these steps work, contact us immediately at (269) 261-0269. Do not attempt to force a repair yourself as data could be at risk.
