Windows Activation Troubleshooting

Windows activation errors prevent use of some features and display persistent watermarks. For retail/OEM licenses, the activation key is tied to the hardware — replacing the motherboard may require calling Microsoft to reactivate by phone. For business environments using KMS (Key Management Service), the client must be able to reach the KMS server. Check with: 'slmgr /dli' to see current license status, and 'slmgr /skms <kms-server>:1688' to set the KMS server, then 'slmgr /ato' to activate. The machine must be on the corporate network or VPN. For Microsoft 365 or Volume License scenarios, activation may use the VAMT tool. Error 0xC004F074 means the KMS server cannot be reached. Error 0xC004C003 means the key is blocked (often used on too many machines). For laptops that are frequently off-network, consider a Multiple Activation Key (MAK) instead of KMS.
