How to Factory Reset a Router

A factory reset erases all custom configuration and restores the router to its out-of-box state. Use this as a last resort after exhausting other troubleshooting steps, or when taking over a device with unknown credentials. For most routers, locate the reset button (usually a small pinhole labeled RESET on the back). With the router powered on, use a straightened paperclip to press and hold the button for 10–30 seconds until the power LED flashes or changes color. The router will reboot with default settings. After reset, access the admin interface using the default IP (commonly 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1), username, and password printed on the router's label. Immediately change the admin password, configure your ISP connection settings, set up your Wi-Fi SSID and WPA3 password, and re-apply any custom settings. Document the configuration in a network log before making changes so you can restore quickly if needed.
