Router and Switch Firmware Updates

Always verify the firmware file's hash (MD5/SHA256) against the manufacturer's listing before uploading. Before updating: back up the current configuration (most routers have an export/backup option). Note that some major firmware versions reset settings. After update, verify all configuration is intact and test connectivity. For managed switches, use the vendor's management software (e.g., Cisco's Device Manager, Ubiquiti UniFi) which can batch-update multiple devices. Set a recurring calendar reminder to check for firmware updates quarterly.
