Wi-Fi dead zones are areas with poor or no wireless signal. Causes include physical obstructions (concrete walls, metal shelving, elevators), distance from the router, interference from other devices, and insufficient access points.
Solutions depend on the scale of the problem. For a single weak area: reposition the existing router/AP to a more central location, or add a wireless range extender (note: extenders halve bandwidth as they repeat the signal). A better solution is adding a wired access point — run an ethernet cable to the dead zone location and connect a dedicated AP, which provides full bandwidth.
For whole-building coverage, deploy a mesh Wi-Fi system (e.g., Ubiquiti UniFi, Eero Pro, Cisco Meraki) with multiple APs on a single SSID. Clients roam seamlessly between APs. Use a Wi-Fi analyzer app (e.g., WiFi Analyzer on Android, NetSpot on Windows/Mac) to map signal strength and identify exactly where coverage drops before positioning new APs.
