When users report slow internet, first establish a baseline. Run a speed test at speedtest.net or fast.com from a wired computer (not over Wi-Fi) to measure actual download/upload speeds and ping. Compare results to your subscribed plan speed — if significantly below, the issue is likely ISP-side or hardware.
Run traceroute (tracert google.com on Windows) to identify where latency spikes occur. Each hop is a network node; a sudden increase in latency at a specific hop points to congestion or a problem at that point. High latency in the first 1–3 hops indicates a local network or ISP issue. High latency at later hops may be distant server issues that don't affect typical browsing much.
Common causes of slow internet: too many simultaneous users (check router's connected device count), a bandwidth-heavy application or backup running in the background, Wi-Fi interference (test wired vs wireless), or ISP throttling. Contact the ISP with speed test results (date/time, wired, compared to plan) when escalating.
