Network Cable Categories: Cat5e vs Cat6 vs Cat6A

The category of ethernet cable determines maximum speed and supported cable length. For new installations, Cat6 is the minimum recommended standard; Cat6A is preferred for future-proofing. Cat5e supports 1 Gbps up to 100 meters — acceptable for most current office deployments but doesn't support 10 Gbps. Cat6 supports 1 Gbps at 100m and 10 Gbps up to 55 meters. Cat6A (Augmented) supports 10 Gbps at the full 100-meter distance and is required for 10GbE backbone runs. Cat6A cables are thicker and require larger conduit. For patch cables (desk to wall jack, switch to patch panel), Cat6 is standard. All cables in a run should be the same category — you cannot achieve Cat6 performance if the connectors or patch panel are Cat5e. Use T568B wiring standard consistently throughout the installation. When running cables, avoid sharp bends (maintain minimum bend radius) and keep away from power cables to reduce interference.
