Wireless Channel Selection to Reduce Interference

Wi-Fi channel selection directly impacts performance, especially in dense office environments where neighboring networks cause interference. The 2.4GHz band has 11 channels but only 3 non-overlapping (1, 6, 11) — set your router to one of these three. The 5GHz band has many more non-overlapping channels (36, 40, 44, 48, 149, 153, 157, 161 are the most commonly available) and is less congested. Use 5GHz for most clients due to its lower interference and higher throughput, reserving 2.4GHz for devices that require longer range. Use a Wi-Fi analyzer tool (WiFi Analyzer, inSSIDer) to scan which channels neighboring networks are using and select the least-congested channel manually — do not rely on 'Auto' channel selection in busy environments. Also consider channel width: 80MHz channels offer higher speeds on 5GHz but can cause more interference; 40MHz is a good balance. Review and adjust channel selection when performance degrades in a changing environment.
