Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electrical power through ethernet cables to devices like IP phones, wireless access points, and IP cameras. When a PoE device isn't powering on, follow these steps.
First, verify the switch port supports PoE and it hasn't been disabled in the switch configuration. Check the PoE budget — switches have a maximum total wattage available for PoE. If the budget is exceeded, the switch may shut down PoE on lower-priority ports. PoE standards: 802.3af provides up to 15.4W per port, 802.3at (PoE+) provides up to 30W, 802.3bt (PoE++) provides up to 60–90W. Ensure the switch standard matches the device requirement.
Try a different PoE port to rule out a faulty port. Test the cable — a damaged cable can fail to deliver sufficient power even if data passes. For cameras and APs requiring PoE+ or PoE++, verify you're not using a lower-power 802.3af switch. A PoE injector (midspan) can supplement power for individual high-wattage devices without replacing the switch.
