Provisioning a Desk IP Phone

VoIP & phone systems IP phone provisioning desk phone setup By Cade · Updated 03/05/26 07:38 AM
Provisioning a desk IP phone registers it to the VoIP system so it can make and receive calls. The process varies by phone model and PBX, but follows a common pattern. Connect the phone to a PoE-enabled network port. The phone boots and displays its IP address — note this for troubleshooting. For auto-provisioning: configure the phone's provisioning server URL in the DHCP server (DHCP option 66) or enter it manually in the phone's web interface. The phone fetches its configuration file from the server, registers automatically, and displays the extension number. Brands supporting auto-provisioning include Yealink, Polycom, Grandstream, and Cisco. For manual provisioning: access the phone's web interface via its IP address. Enter the SIP server address, SIP port (usually 5060 or 5061 for TLS), extension number, SIP username, and password. Save and reboot. Verify registration in the PBX admin panel — the extension should show as Registered. Test inbound and outbound calls.
