SharePoint: Can't Access a Site or Getting 'Access Denied'

SharePoint / OneDrive SharePoint access denied permissions site 403 By Kerry · Updated 03/04/26 10:34 PM
Getting "Access Denied" or "You need permission to access this site" in SharePoint? Here's what's happening and how to fix it. Why it happens: - You haven't been granted access to that SharePoint site or library - You're signed in with the wrong Microsoft account - Your permissions were recently changed or revoked - The site owner hasn't shared it with you yet Step 1: Check which account you're signed in with In the top-right corner of SharePoint, click your profile picture or initials. Make sure it shows your work email, not a personal Microsoft account. Step 2: Try signing out and back in Sign out from the top-right > sign back in with your work email and password. Step 3: Clear your browser cache Old cached credentials can cause false access denied errors. In Chrome: Ctrl + Shift + Delete > Clear cookies and cached data. Then try accessing the SharePoint site again. Step 4: Try a different browser or Incognito mode Open the SharePoint URL in a private window (Ctrl+Shift+N in Chrome). If it works there, the issue is with cached data in your regular browser. Step 5: Request access If you genuinely don't have permission, click the "Request Access" link on the error page and explain why you need access. The site owner will receive a notification. Step 6: Contact us If you should already have access and can't get in, contact us. We can check your permissions in the admin portal and fix it quickly.
