Number porting transfers your existing phone number(s) to a new VoIP provider without changing the number — customers keep the same number they've always called. The process is called LNP (Local Number Portability) and is legally required in most countries.
The process: submit a port request to the new provider with a Letter of Authorization (LOA), your current account details with the old provider, and the numbers to port. The new provider submits the request to the old provider. Porting typically takes 5–10 business days for regular numbers; toll-free numbers can take 2–4 weeks.
Important: do not cancel your old service before porting completes — the number will be lost. Keep the old account active until porting is confirmed. The port happens on a specific date and time (the 'Firm Order Commitment' date, or FOC date) — brief interruptions of 15–30 minutes are normal. After porting, confirm all numbers ring correctly and test with external callers. Update your number listings on Google Business, website, and business cards.
