E911 Location Registration for VoIP

VoIP & phone systems E911 emergency calling VoIP location By Cade · Updated 03/05/26 07:38 AM
E911 (Enhanced 911) ensures emergency services can locate a caller. Unlike traditional landlines, VoIP phones don't automatically have a fixed address — you must register a location for each device or user, especially for mobile and remote workers. In hosted VoIP platforms (RingCentral, 8x8, etc.), E911 location registration is required during setup. Each physical address where a device may be used should be registered. For remote workers, they must update their registered address when working from a new location. For on-premises 3CX, E911 routing must be configured to send emergency calls out a specific trunk that passes caller location data. Test E911 by dialing 933 (the E911 test line in the US) — it reads back the registered address without dispatching services. Never leave E911 location records blank or inaccurate — emergency response delays can be life-threatening. Review and update E911 records annually and whenever office locations change.
