If Microsoft 365 apps are showing "Unlicensed Product," "Subscription Expired," or "Activate Office," here's what to do.
Common Causes
- Your Microsoft 365 subscription has lapsed
- The license hasn't been assigned to your account in the admin portal
- You're signed into the wrong Microsoft account in Office
Step 1: Sign out and sign back in to Office
Open any Office app (Word, Excel, etc.), go to File > Account, click Sign Out, then sign back in with your work email address. This often forces Office to re-check your license.
Step 2: Check the account shown in Office
In any Office app, go to File > Account. Make sure the account listed under "User Information" is your correct work email. If it shows a personal account, sign out and sign in with your work email.
Step 3: Run Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant (SaRA)
Download SaRA from https://aka.ms/SaRA and run the Office activation troubleshooter. It automatically detects and fixes most activation issues.
Step 4: For admins — check the license in the admin portal
Go to admin.microsoft.com > Users > Active Users, select the affected user, and confirm a Microsoft 365 license is assigned. If not, assign one.
Step 5: Reinstall Office
If none of the above work, sign in to office.com, go to My Account > Install Office, uninstall the existing copy via Control Panel, and reinstall fresh.
Contact us if the issue persists — license problems are almost always fixable within minutes.
