Resolving Paper Jams on Laser and Inkjet Printers

Paper jams are one of the most common printer complaints. The key rule: always pull jammed paper in the direction of paper travel — never backward through rollers, as this can damage them. Open all access panels (front cover, rear access door, output tray) to find all paper fragments. For laser printers: open the front cover to access the toner area. If paper is visible, pull it gently toward the output tray. Check the rear door — many jams require accessing the fuser area from the back. Wait 30 seconds before reaching into the fuser area — it operates at high temperatures. Ensure you've removed all torn paper fragments — even a small piece left behind will cause repeated jams. To prevent jams: use the paper weight specified for your printer, fan the paper before loading to separate sheets, don't overfill the tray, and ensure paper guides are snug against the paper edges. Keep paper in its packaging until use to prevent moisture absorption (damp paper causes jams). If jams occur frequently in the same area, the feed rollers may need cleaning or replacement.
