BIOS/UEFI Updates: When and How to Update

The BIOS/UEFI is firmware that initializes hardware before the OS loads. Updates fix bugs (compatibility with new hardware, stability issues), patch security vulnerabilities (Spectre/Meltdown mitigations required BIOS updates), and may add new features. When to update: if you're experiencing specific issues the update addresses (check the release notes), before adding new hardware (CPU upgrades especially), or to apply critical security patches. Do not update BIOS speculatively without a reason — a failed BIOS update can brick the motherboard. Update process: identify your current BIOS version (msinfo32 > BIOS Version/Date). Download the update from the manufacturer's support site using the exact model number. For laptops: use the manufacturer's update tool (HP Support Assistant, Dell Command Update, Lenovo System Update) — they handle the process safely. For desktops: use the UEFI's built-in update utility (EZ Flash, Q-Flash) after placing the file on a USB drive. Ensure the laptop is plugged in and the battery is at least 50% before updating. Never interrupt a BIOS update.
