UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) Setup and Maintenance

A UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) provides battery backup during power outages and protects equipment from power surges and voltage fluctuations. Connect servers, network equipment (router, switches), and critical workstations to UPS units. Consumer-grade surge protectors alone are insufficient for professional equipment. UPS sizing: calculate the total wattage of connected devices and select a UPS with a VA rating of at least 1.25x that total. Factor in the desired runtime — how long you need to stay running during an outage to gracefully shut down. Most UPS units include management software (CyberPower PowerPanel, APC PowerChute) that can automatically shut down servers safely when battery reaches a low level. Maintenance: UPS batteries typically last 3–5 years. Most UPS units have a battery test function — run it annually. Replace batteries when the self-test fails or runtime drops significantly. The battery manufacturer (APC, CyberPower, Tripp Lite) sells replacement battery packs. Keep UPS units in a cool, dry location — heat significantly reduces battery life. Test the UPS annually by simulating a power cut (pull the plug) and verify equipment stays on.
