Dust accumulation inside computers blocks airflow, causes overheating, and can shorten hardware lifespan. Laptops and desktops in office environments should be cleaned annually (or more frequently in dusty environments).
Desktop cleaning: shut down and unplug. Take the computer outside or to a ventilated area. Use compressed air (canned or from a compressor with a nozzle) to blow dust from fans, heatsinks, and vents. Hold fans still while blowing to prevent over-spinning (which can damage fan bearings). Pay special attention to the CPU heatsink, GPU fan, and case fans.
Laptop cleaning: compressed air through the exhaust vents (usually on the sides or bottom) while the laptop is off. For severe cases, the laptop bottom panel must be removed to access and clean the fan and heatsink directly. If a laptop is consistently running hot after cleaning, the thermal compound between the CPU and heatsink may have dried out — replacement requires disassembly and is a job for a technician. Monitor temperatures using HWiNFO or Core Temp to confirm cleaning resolved the overheating.
