Barcode Scanner Setup and Configuration

USB barcode scanners are plug-and-play HID (Human Interface Device) devices — they appear to the computer as a keyboard and send scan data as keystrokes. No driver installation is needed in most cases. Simply plug in the scanner, open the target application (spreadsheet, ERP, browser field), click the input field, and scan — the barcode data populates as if typed. Configuration: most scanners can be configured by scanning special programming barcodes from the scanner's setup guide. Common settings: enable/disable a carriage return (Enter) after each scan (useful for scanning lists — each scan automatically moves to the next row), set scan mode (single-line vs continuous), and configure prefix/suffix characters. For Bluetooth scanners: pair in Bluetooth settings, then configure as above. Verify the scanner is in 'HID mode' for universal compatibility, or 'SPP mode' for serial-over-Bluetooth applications. If scans produce incorrect characters, the scanner's character encoding may not match the Windows keyboard layout — set the scanner to US keyboard layout via the programming guide. Test with multiple barcode formats (Code 128, QR, EAN) if you use multiple types in your operation.
