Folder Redirection: Redirecting My Documents to a Network Share

Folder redirection transparently moves Windows user folders (Documents, Desktop, Pictures) to a network share. Users see them locally but files are stored centrally — enabling backup, access from any computer, and protection against local drive failure. Configure via Group Policy: User Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Folder Redirection. Right-click the folder (e.g., Documents) > Properties > Basic tab > Root path: \\server\shares\%username%. Enable 'Grant the user exclusive rights' and 'Move the contents of Documents to the new location.' For best performance, ensure the file server has sufficient capacity and the network connection is reliable — slow WAN links cause poor performance with redirected folders. Large files (videos, large CAD files) in redirected folders can slow down significantly over the network. Consider excluding such files using offline files settings.
