Quality structured cabling is the foundation of reliable networking. Poor cabling causes intermittent connectivity, speed issues, and difficult troubleshooting. Follow these best practices for office cable installations.
Cable management: run cables in conduit or cable trays — never staple ethernet cables (compresses the cable and degrades performance). Maintain a minimum bend radius of 4x the cable diameter. Keep ethernet cables away from fluorescent lights and power cables (minimum 6 inches parallel, or cross at 90 degrees when unavoidable) to reduce electromagnetic interference.
Labeling: label both ends of every cable with consistent identifiers (e.g., 'A101' where A is the room, 101 is the port number). Use a label printer — hand-written labels fade and fall off. Patch panels connect permanent wall cable runs to the switch; label each port on the patch panel. After installation, test every cable run with a cable certifier (Fluke Networks DSX, or a basic cable tester for less critical applications). Document the cable schedule in a spreadsheet or DCIM tool.
