Slow Wi-Fi can be frustrating and has multiple possible causes. Use a systematic approach to narrow it down. First, test wired vs wireless: run a speed test on a wired computer and a wireless device at the same time. If wired is fast but wireless is slow, the issue is Wi-Fi specific (not the internet connection itself).
Common causes and fixes: too many devices on 2.4GHz — move capable devices to 5GHz (faster, less congested). Channel congestion — use a Wi-Fi analyzer to identify and switch to a less crowded channel. Distance from AP — the signal drops with distance; test closer to the AP to confirm. Interference — cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwaves on 2.4GHz cause drops; switch to 5GHz. Outdated AP firmware — update it. Client driver issues — update the wireless adapter driver on the slow device.
For persistent issues affecting many users, check the AP's client count (high-density = lower per-client bandwidth) and consider adding APs. Review the AP's error logs for excessive retransmissions or authentication failures, which indicate RF or infrastructure problems.
