Your phone system is business-critical — a PBX failure means no incoming or outgoing calls. A backup and recovery plan minimizes downtime. For hosted VoIP, the provider handles infrastructure redundancy; focus your planning on internet connection redundancy (failover to LTE) and documenting your configuration.
For on-premises 3CX: use the built-in backup function (Admin > Backup & Restore > Backup Now). Schedule automatic daily backups. Store backups in at least two locations — local NAS and offsite cloud storage (3CX supports backup to Amazon S3, Azure Blob, or Google Drive). Test restores quarterly by restoring to a test environment.
Disaster recovery options: 3CX Cloud hosting (migrate your on-premises instance to the cloud for a few dollars per month — eliminates single-point-of-failure of the local server). Failover routing on SIP trunk: configure your provider to redirect calls to mobile numbers if the PBX becomes unreachable. This keeps you reachable during a server failure while you restore service. Document the recovery procedure step-by-step so any IT staff member can execute it under pressure.
