Browser Security Settings for Business Computers

Browsers are the primary attack surface for most users. Configuring browser security settings across the organization reduces exposure to drive-by downloads, malicious extensions, and phishing sites. Microsoft Edge management: deploy settings via Intune or Group Policy (ADMX templates available from Microsoft). Key settings: enable SmartScreen (blocks known malicious sites and downloads), enable pop-up blocker, disable password saving (encourage password manager use instead), configure approved extensions list, and enable Enhanced Security Mode. For Chrome: use Google Admin Console or the Chrome Enterprise ADMX templates for Group Policy deployment. Enable Safe Browsing (Enhanced Protection), force HTTPS, and control extension installation. For both browsers: configure the browser not to remember credit card information and to clear cookies on exit for work computers. Block flash (already deprecated) and Java applets. Enable automatic browser updates — browsers release security patches frequently. Consider web filtering (DNS or proxy) as a complementary layer to browser settings.
