Laptop batteries degrade over time — capacity reduces with each charge cycle. Most batteries maintain good capacity for 300-500 full cycles. After 2-3 years of heavy use, significant capacity loss (20-40%) is common. Check battery health in Windows: open Command Prompt and run 'powercfg /batteryreport' — this generates an HTML report showing current capacity vs original design capacity and charge cycle history.
Extending battery life: avoid storing the laptop at 100% charge for extended periods (optimal long-term storage: 50-60%). Enable battery conservation mode in the laptop's power management software (Lenovo Vantage, HP Support Assistant, Dell Power Manager) — this limits charging to 80%, significantly extending cycle life. Keep the laptop in a cool environment; heat is the primary cause of battery degradation.
Replacement: when battery capacity drops below 70% of original or runtime becomes unacceptably short, replace the battery. For most business laptops (Dell Latitude, HP EliteBook, Lenovo ThinkPad), replacement batteries are available from the manufacturer or reliable third parties. For ultrathin laptops with glued batteries, professional replacement is strongly recommended. Dispose of old batteries through proper electronics recycling — never in general waste.
