Well-maintained computers last longer, run better, and cause fewer disruptions to your business. Here are practical steps to keep your machines running well.
1. Restart regularly
Don't just put computers to sleep — actually restart them at least a few times a week. This clears memory, applies updates, and resolves minor issues before they grow.
2. Keep Windows updated
Go to Settings > Windows Update and install updates promptly. Updates contain security patches and bug fixes. We can also help manage updates across your fleet automatically.
3. Don't let the hard drive get full
Keep at least 15–20% of your C: drive free. A full hard drive slows Windows significantly. Use Disk Cleanup (search in Start menu) regularly to remove temporary files.
4. Use good antivirus and keep it updated
Make sure antivirus definitions are up to date. Run a full scan monthly.
5. Clean physically
Wipe screens with a microfiber cloth. Use compressed air on keyboard and vents every few months. Keep drinks away from keyboards.
6. Manage startup programs
Too many programs launching at startup slows everything down. Open Task Manager > Startup apps and disable anything you don't need immediately on login.
7. Use a surge protector or UPS
Power surges and outages can damage hardware and corrupt data. A quality surge protector protects the machine; a UPS (uninterruptible power supply) also gives you time to shut down safely during an outage.
8. Know when to replace
Generally, a business computer older than 5–6 years is due for replacement. Repair costs on old hardware often exceed the value. Contact us if you're unsure — we can assess your machines and give honest recommendations.
9. Call us before problems get bad
Early intervention is always cheaper than crisis repair. If something seems slow or odd, call us before it becomes a data loss or hardware failure situation.
