Voicemail transcription converts voice messages to text and delivers them via email or SMS, allowing users to quickly read messages without listening to audio — particularly useful in noisy environments or during meetings.
Many hosted VoIP platforms (RingCentral, 8x8, Vonage) include transcription natively. Enable it in the user's voicemail settings in the admin portal. The transcribed text appears in the email notification alongside the audio attachment.
For 3CX, transcription requires a third-party integration (3CX Voicemail Transcription via Whisper AI or Google Speech-to-Text). Quality varies — transcription accuracy is typically 85-95% for clear recordings in quiet environments. Common errors: proper nouns, industry jargon, and callers with heavy accents. Advise users to treat transcriptions as a quick preview rather than authoritative text — listen to the original for anything important. Transcriptions are stored as plain text in email, making voicemails searchable.
