Word: Document Won't Save or Keeps Crashing

Microsoft 365 Word won't save crash not responding document file error By Kerry · Updated 03/04/26 10:41 PM
If Microsoft Word won't save your document, crashes when you try to save, or gives a file error, here's how to recover and fix the problem. Step 1: Check for AutoRecover files first If Word crashed before you saved, look for the AutoRecover file. 1. Open Word 2. It should show a Document Recovery pane on the left — open any files listed there 3. If not shown, go to File > Info > Manage Document > Recover Unsaved Documents Step 2: Try Save As to a different location If saving fails, try File > Save As and save to your Desktop instead of the original location. If this works, the issue is with the original save location (network drive, OneDrive, USB drive). Step 3: Try saving as a different format Go to File > Save As, and in the format dropdown, choose "Word Document (.docx)" if it's not already set. Sometimes a file gets stuck in a legacy format. Step 4: Open Word in Safe Mode Hold Ctrl and double-click Word to open in Safe Mode. Try opening and saving the document from there. If it works, a Word add-in is causing the crash. To disable add-ins: File > Options > Add-ins > COM Add-ins > Go > uncheck all > restart Word. Step 5: Copy content to a new document If the file itself is corrupted: 1. Open the problem document 2. Select all text (Ctrl+A) and copy (Ctrl+C) 3. Open a brand new blank Word document 4. Paste (Ctrl+V) 5. Save the new document This bypasses corruption in the file container. Step 6: Check your disk space If the C: drive or network drive is full, Word can't save. Check available space and free some up if needed. Step 7: Repair Office Go to Settings > Apps > Microsoft 365 > Modify > Quick Repair. This fixes common installation issues that cause save failures.
