If Outlook keeps popping up a password box even after you enter the correct password, this is one of the most common Outlook issues. Here's how to fix it.
Why it happens:
- Your Microsoft 365 password was recently changed but Outlook still has the old one saved
- Windows Credential Manager has old or corrupted saved credentials
- Your account requires Modern Authentication but Outlook is using Basic Authentication
Step 1: Update saved credentials in Windows Credential Manager
1. Open the Start menu and search for "Credential Manager"
2. Click on "Windows Credentials"
3. Look for any entries starting with "MicrosoftOffice" or "Office" or your company email
4. Click each one and select "Edit" or "Remove"
5. Restart Outlook and sign in fresh when prompted
Step 2: Make sure your password is entered correctly
When the password prompt appears, type your current Microsoft 365 password carefully. Check that Caps Lock is off.
Step 3: Check "Remember my credentials"
When Outlook shows the sign-in prompt, look for a checkbox that says "Remember my credentials" or "Keep me signed in" and make sure it is checked.
Step 4: Sign out and back into Office
In Outlook, go to File > Office Account > Sign Out. Close Outlook completely, reopen it, and sign back in with your full email and password.
Step 5: Run the SaRA tool
Download SaRA from https://aka.ms/SaRA, select Outlook, and run the credential troubleshooter. It can automatically fix authentication issues.
Step 6: Contact us
If the loop continues, there may be a deeper issue with your account configuration. Call us at (269) 261-0269 and we can usually resolve this remotely in under 15 minutes.
