VPN issues are one of the most common remote work problems. Here's how to troubleshoot them.
Step 1: Check your internet connection first
The VPN can't work without a working internet connection. Open a browser and confirm you can reach a website like google.com. If you have no internet, fix that first — then reconnect the VPN.
Step 2: Disconnect and reconnect
Open your VPN client (provided by us — e.g. GlobalProtect, Cisco AnyConnect, Fortinet, etc.) and disconnect, then reconnect. Many intermittent issues resolve with a fresh connection.
Step 3: Restart the VPN application
Fully close the VPN app (check the system tray — right-click > Exit) and reopen it. Then try connecting again.
Step 4: Restart your computer
A full restart clears network state issues that cause VPN failures.
Step 5: Check your credentials
VPN credentials are separate from your Windows login. Make sure you're entering the correct VPN username and password. If your Microsoft 365 password was recently changed, the VPN password may have changed too (depends on your setup).
Step 6: Check for VPN software updates
Open the VPN app and look for an update option. Running an outdated client can cause connection failures after server updates.
Step 7: Check Windows Firewall and antivirus
Security software can interfere with VPN connections. Temporarily disable your antivirus and try connecting — if it works, add the VPN application to your antivirus exclusions.
Step 8: Try a different network
If you're on home Wi-Fi and the VPN won't connect, try connecting your laptop to your phone's mobile hotspot. If VPN works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi, your ISP or home router may be blocking VPN traffic (some ISPs block certain VPN protocols).
