If the Windows 11 taskbar is frozen, missing, or the Start menu won't open, here's how to fix it.
Step 1: Restart Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer manages the taskbar and Start menu. Restarting it often fixes freezes without needing a full reboot.
1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager
2. In the Processes list, find "Windows Explorer"
3. Right-click it > Restart
4. The taskbar will disappear briefly and then reappear — check if it's working
Step 2: Restart the computer
If restarting Explorer doesn't help, do a full restart. Press Win + X (even if the taskbar is broken) > Shut down or sign out > Restart.
Step 3: Run System File Checker
Corrupted Windows files can cause taskbar failures.
1. Press Win + X > Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin)
2. Type: sfc /scannow and press Enter
3. Wait for the scan to complete — it may take 10–20 minutes
4. Restart when done
Step 4: Check for Windows Updates
A bad Windows Update can break the taskbar. Check for a newer update that may fix it:
Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. Also look in Update History for any recently failed or problematic updates.
Step 5: Roll back a recent update
If the problem started right after a Windows Update:
Settings > Windows Update > Update History > Uninstall updates > find the most recent update and uninstall it.
Step 6: Check for malware
Malware can interfere with Windows system processes. Run a full scan with Windows Security or your installed antivirus.
Step 7: Create a new user profile
Taskbar issues are sometimes tied to a corrupted user profile.
1. Create a new Windows user account (Settings > Accounts > Other users > Add account)
2. Sign in with the new account
3. If the taskbar works there, your original profile is corrupted — contact us and we can migrate your data to the new profile
Contact us if none of these steps resolve the issue — we can run deeper diagnostics remotely.
